CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure, while APAP stands for auto-titrating positive airway pressure. Both types of machine supply air pressure into your airways to hold them open so they can no longer narrow or close while you sleep.

CPAP usually refers to a fixed pressure machine. This kind of machine delivers air at one constant pressure throughout the night. The pressure is specific to you and is sufficient to hold your airways open 95% of the time.

APAP automatically increases or decreases the air pressure it delivers to your airways during the night, depending upon how much force is required to hold them open. It continually responds to changes in your airway and only increases the air pressure when it is really needed.
