AHI stands for apnoea-hypopnoea index. An apnoea is a pause in breathing lasting for at least 10 seconds. Sometimes you continue to breathe but the airflow through your airways is substantially reduced. This is known as a hypopnoea.
Your AHI is the average number of apnoeas and hypopnoeas per hour of sleep. It is worked out by adding up the total number of apnoeas plus hypopnoeas in a night and dividing this number by the total hours of sleep. The AHI is used to gauge the severity of your sleep apnoea.
