I’ve been using CPAP for four years and have just started a new relationship. My partner doesn’t like the machine so is there a natural cure?

There are currently no medical cures for sleep apnoea. Positive airway pressure therapy, for example, is a long term treatment to relieve your symptoms, but it will not cure your sleep apnoea over time. A positive airway pressure machine blows air through a mask which is worn on your face. The mask then directs this pressurised air through your airways which helps you to breathe.

If you have Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and are overweight or obese, losing weight will reduce the severity level of your sleep apnoea and may even cure it completely. A study suggests that if you lose 10% of your body weight, the severity of your Obstructive Sleep Apnoea will drop by about 26%.

The positive effects of weight loss on your Obstructive Sleep Apnoea depend on:

    • How much weight you lose
    • The severity of your Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
    • Whether you have an additional cause of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, such as slender air passages.

You will have the greatest success if you exercise regularly, stop smoking and avoid alcohol. Research suggests you can also strengthen the muscles in your airways and reduce the severity of sleep apnoea by playing the didgeridoo.
