Are you overweight?
Being overweight is one of the leading causes of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Excess weight around your neck is most risky as the fatty tissue tends to narrow your airways. Extra mass around your waist and upper body also places you at risk as it reduces your lung volumes and affects your ability to keep your airways open.
The effects of weight loss
Weight loss is a natural and effective way of reducing the severity of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea if you are overweight or obese. Weight loss can mean your treatment doesn’t have to be so intrusive. Sometimes it may even mean you no longer require treatment.
Diet and activity
Excess weight gain occurs when there is an energy imbalance in your body. If you consume more energy in food and drink than you expend in daily living, you will put on weight. The best way to lose weight is by reducing your portion sizes and becoming more physically active.
Medical help with weight loss
Losing weight can seem like a daunting task. For some people, medical intervention is a necessity. You may be eligible for medication or surgery to help you lose weight if you meet certain criteria; for example, having a certain Body Mass Index or a weight-related disease.
