Obesity epidemic
We are in the midst of a global obesity epidemic. Global figures in 2016 showed 39% of adults aged 18 or over were overweight and 13% were obese. This represents a doubling of obesity levels over a period of 34 years.
Obesity-related health problems
Unfortunately, weight gain brings with it many health problems and can increase your risk of:
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Colon and breast cancer
- Depression
- Acid reflux
- Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.
Obesity and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
Being overweight can cause Obstructive Sleep Apnoea for several reasons, including:
- A thicker neck, a larger tongue, or fatty deposits in your airway walls that make them narrow.
- Extra stomach mass pushing on the lungs. This reduces lung volumes and affects your ability to keep the airways open.
Weight loss
If you are overweight, weight loss may reduce the severity of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Losing weight is not easy, but even losing a little can help improve your symptoms.
There are many ways to lose weight; the best is through a low calorie diet and increased physical activity. If you are overweight, your doctor may be able to refer you to a dietician or fitness trainer for help with diet and lifestyle changes.
Alternatively, if you are struggling to lose excess weight you may be offered medical help, such as weight loss medication or surgery.
